EXCLUSIVE INTERVIEW WITH LADY DEATH: UNHOLY RUIN CO-WRITER MIKE MACLEAN!
Jimmy Calabrese of Coffin Comics sat down with Lady Death co-writer Mike MacLean about the upcoming Lady Death: Unholy Ruin #1 premiering on Kickstarter on August 23, 2017. Check it out!
JIMMY CALABRESE: Hey Mike, I love what’s been announced for Unholy Ruin. The story sounds insane! What can you tell us about it?
MIKE MACLEAN: After the harrowing events of Merciless Onslaught, Lady Death becomes a warrior without a war. Unfortunately, this allows her mind free reign to mourn the passing of her beloved steed, Vassago. Gripped by her loss, Lady Death abandons her allies and wanders the wastelands. It’s not long before her enemies come gunning for vengeance. They lure our Diva of Death into a game show so twisted, so blood-soaked, it could only take place in bowels of Hell: GORE GALORE!
JC: I love the concept of the GORE GALORE. It reminds me of something out of an 80’s movie. Can you tell us more about that?
MM: Arnold Schwarzenegger’s 1987 cheese classic The Running Man was a huge influence on this script. By the way, in this context the term “cheese” is a high compliment. This flick is like a fine Gouda—a kick ass, satirical romp. I think we capture the same over-the-top, darkly comic fun in Unholy Ruin.
JC: What can you tell us about the reintroduction of WAR ANGEL? Fans are really excited for her return.
MM: WAR ANGEL is one of the coolest characters from Brian’s post-Chaos! era. She’s a cold-blooded bad ass of the highest order with some awesome superhuman abilities. I’d wager those new to Lady Death saga will really dig her. A great addition to Lady Death’s cadre of antiheroes.
JC: Are there any new characters we should be excited about?
MM: Along with the reintroduction of War Angel, readers meet the wickedly amusing DEVLIN DAX. Brian describes him as a demonic version of The Gong Show’sChuck Barris. Devlin is smarmy, charming, and utterly sadistic. He rocks a tux and smiles shark-like while torturing contestants for the amusement of his depraved audience. Devlin was a ton of fun to write, and we hope even more fun to read.
JC: Ha! DEVLIN DAX sound awesome. So, what makes this sixth story different than the previous ones?
MM: Unholy Ruin has all the elements that Lady Death fans crave—intense action, high drama, sexy supernatural characters—all wrapped in a heavy metal inspired package. But this chapter also hits readers with a heavy dose of dark humor. Of all the scripts I’ve been fortunate to co-write with Brian, Unholy Ruin is my favorite. It’s bloody-good fun.
JC: Who doesn’t love bloody-good fun?! So for those on the fence, can you explain why fans should back the Kickstarter?
MM: The only thing more insane than a game show in Hell, is a Brian Pulido Kickstarter. Brian and the Coffin Comics crew make them events not to be missed. They’re crazy carnivals full of wild promotions, fun stretch goals, and wicked collectable covers. If you don’t believe me, just ask some of the previous backers. I’ve never heard of anyone who regretted jumping into the swirling madness that is a Lady Death Kickstarter.
JC: The Lady Death: Unholy Ruin story and the Kickstarter sound amazing! Any last words?
MM: Okay, this sounds like next-level ass-kissing, but Lady Death has the coolest fans in the world of comics. I for one feel lucky to be part of such an amazing community. Thanks Fiends! We couldn’t do this without you. LONG LIVE LADY DEATH!!!
